Admittedly, it is not for everyone. Sure, it can be a quick process, will save you money, guarantees you the freshest possible coffee created to your specific tastes, is healthier and less wasteful.

But, some people just aren’t into those sort of things.

These are probably the same people that don’t like the smell of puppy breath and glorious foggy sunrises either. Just saying.

Some people have the drive to learn and create while being self-sufficient and naturally unprocessed.

Unless you are 100% confident (or at least 85%) that you really want to embrace the art of roasting coffee, start small and easy.

Buy a popcorn popper, use a skillet or a whirly pop on the stove. Yep, you heard me. An air popper and a candy thermometer and you are ready to roast the freshest cup of coffee you’ve ever tasted.

It really is that simple.

How long does roasting coffee take?

Depending on your preference of roast, anywhere from 5-10 minutes.

During this time the coffee is going to go through several different stages and colors. Get your coffee geek hat on and get excited about the process.

While you can drink your now perfectly roasted coffee right away it’s definitely not recommended. Ideally, you’ll let your freshly roasted coffee rest for 12-24 hours. Then store in an airtight container.

Once roasted, coffee will immediately start to lose its fresh flavor and healthy antioxidants. However, the green coffee beans can be stored for years. Then, only roast what you need for half the week and enjoy getting to know your preferences.
