Why bother roasting your own coffee?

Have you wondered about roasting coffee at home?

Admittedly, it is not for everyone. Sure, it can be a quick process, will save you money, guarantees you the freshest possible coffee created to your specific tastes, is healthier and less wasteful.

But, some people just aren’t into those sort of things.

These are probably the same people that don’t like the smell of puppy breath and glorious foggy sunrises either. Just saying.

Some people have the drive to learn and create while being self-sufficient and naturally unprocessed.

Be honest. If you are in fact one of those people we’re about to help you find your next passion. Once you taste a cup of freshly roasted coffee you will never go back.

And the best part? Roasting coffee can be as easy, fun and inexpensive.

Simple Coffee Roasting Options to Get Started

The Good News: You don’t have to buy a home roasting machine to achieve an amazing cup of coffee.
Why? When you are considering trying something new the more expensive and space invasive the tools are, the less likely you are to make the leap.

Unless you are 100% confident (or at least 85%) that you really want to embrace the art of roasting coffee, start small and easy.

Buy a popcorn popper, use a skillet or a whirly pop on the stove. Yep, you heard me. An air popper and a candy thermometer and you are ready to roast the freshest cup of coffee you’ve ever tasted.

It really is that simple.
As soon as you realize that this is a lifestyle that you want to embrace, come on back and find the perfect home roaster to fit your needs. Consistency and ease of use will ensure that it is an investment you will always value.

How long does roasting coffee take?

Depending on your preference of roast, anywhere from 5-10 minutes.

During this time the coffee is going to go through several different stages and colors. Get your coffee geek hat on and get excited about the process.

You’ll watch as the coffee shifts from a green to a yellow and then cracks as the moisture is pushed from the bean. The flavors deepen the longer you roast and some prefer this lighter flavor profile.

You can consider your coffee perfectly roaster here, or let it linger for a second crack and a deeper more intense flavor profile.

While you can drink your now perfectly roasted coffee right away it’s definitely not recommended. Ideally, you’ll let your freshly roasted coffee rest for 12-24 hours. Then store in an airtight container.

Note: Never store your coffee in your freezer. No matter what your grandma told you.

Once roasted, coffee will immediately start to lose its fresh flavor and healthy antioxidants. However, the green coffee beans can be stored for years. Then, only roast what you need for half the week and enjoy getting to know your preferences.

Coffee has always been at its roots about connecting. With yourself for a few moments in the morning or with old friends at the end of the day. In a world that is increasingly fast-paced and automated share some of yourself in a custom blend.

So give it a go.
